In 2022, artist Rachel Harms Mahlandt created a map that has sparked a unique and whimsical trend across the globe. The map, aptly named "Sidewalk Joy," serves as a treasure map of sorts, guiding people to local art installations, exchange libraries, and trinket trading boxes in Portland. But its impact has since spread far beyond its original city.
Since its inception, the concept has taken off, with locker-like boxes filled with small treasures for trade appearing in Eugene and Springfield neighborhoods and businesses. These boxes have become a delightful surprise, bringing a sense of childhood wonder back to communities.
One of the key participants in this movement is Sunny Van Ausdall, the assistant manager of Sparrow Nest Coffee in downtown Eugene. Van Ausdall shared her experience with the trinket trading box, emphasizing its positive impact on the community.
"I think it brings back a childhood feel," Van Ausdall said. "I think that a lot of people crave a reason to have toys again, and I think that this gives them a reason."
The boxes operate on a simple "take one, leave one" principle, encouraging a continuous cycle of exchange. Some boxes have additional rules, such as not leaving trash and ensuring the contents are child-appropriate. The Sidewalk Joy map provides a comprehensive overview, listing eight trinket and toy trading boxes in the Eugene Springfield area and an impressive 1,596 worldwide.
Participants can explore a diverse range of exchanges on the map and even register their own boxes for inclusion. Van Ausdall's experience highlights the ease of the process, as her box was approved and added to the map within just a couple of days.
This global initiative has created a unique and engaging community experience, blending art, play, and local interaction. It's a testament to the power of simple ideas and their ability to bring people together, fostering a sense of joy and connection in unexpected ways.
